What is the Insekten-Teufel? An alkaline bug remover from TUGA Chemie GmbH with a pH of 9.0 to 9.5 and a thixotropic gel structure. The formula pairs non-ionic and anionic surfactants (under 5 percent) with the glycol ether solvent 1-methoxy-2-propanol as a calibrated volatility component. The alkaline breakdown denatures animal proteins and dissolves the chitin shells of bug carcasses, pollen and bird droppings. The gel structure makes it cling to vertical front panels and grilles — no run marks. Maximum dwell time 2 to 4 minutes. Cleared for paint, glass, chrome and plastics — on carnauba-waxed cars, expect the protective layer to break down faster.
Insekten-Teufel® is TUGA Chemie's dedicated front-end cleaner, working in the mildly alkaline range that's tuned specifically to denature animal proteins. The pH of 9.0 to 9.5 is the sweet spot for the alkaline breakdown of chitin (the main building block of bug shells) and the long-chain proteins from insect blood, pollen glue and bird droppings.
TUGA Chemie from Osnabrück has been making these formulas in Germany for decades, supplying commercial detailers, workshops and serious private customers across the DACH region.
The formula combines three chemical mechanisms. First, the non-ionic and anionic surfactants drop the surface tension of the water sharply — the solution works its way deep into the pores of the dried-on bug grime. Second, alkaline hydrolysis breaks the protein chains and the chitin into smaller, water-soluble fragments. Third, the solvent 1-methoxy-2-propanol (monopropylene glycol methyl ether, CAS 107-98-2) emulsifies organic compounds like tree sap and pollen wax. The vapour pressure of 10.9 to 12.6 mm Hg at 25 degrees and the moderate evaporation rate of 0.62 to 0.75 give it a calibrated volatility — fast enough to start lifting, slow enough not to flash off too early.
The key physical mechanism is the rheological shift into a viscous gel. The water-thin bug removers of the 1990s ran straight off vertical front panels — contact time on the grime was minimal. The gel structure of the Insekten-Teufel wraps around each bug, encapsulates it and stops the water phase from evaporating too quickly. That gives the surfactants and the solvent time to soften the dried proteins by hydration.

Detailing1's tip from the shop: Day-to-day, on the touring cars that come in weekly for care we see the same pattern: leave the Insekten-Teufel on longer than 4 minutes — usually because a coffee break happens in between — and you risk etching the paint. The alkaline surfactant residue crystallises on the paint surface and leaves dull or whitish spots that only paint correction can remove. On a black bumper sitting at 50 to 60 degrees, that window shrinks to 60 seconds. Usage runs 50 to 80 ml per car front, and that's plenty — lay down more and you're just burning through product. On carnauba-waxed cars Detailing1 always plans a quick-detailer refresh of the treated areas, because the alkaline surfactants strip the wax layer harder than pH-neutral shampoos do. On ceramic-coated cars that's a non-issue — SiO₂ coatings are far more resistant.
The standard workflow starts by checking the paint temperature. The bumpers, grille and windscreen need to be down to ambient temperature — after a long motorway run, wait at least 30 minutes or cool it down first with cold pressure-washer water. In direct sun, move the car into the shade or work in the morning or evening hours.
Spray the Insekten-Teufel evenly from 20 to 30 centimetres onto every bug-loaded front area: front bumper, grille (especially between the slats), windscreen and mirror glass. The gel grabs onto vertical surfaces straight away — no running off like the water-thin competition. On heavily loaded cars after a long motorway run, also hit the mirror housings and the top edge of the bonnet.
Let it dwell two to four minutes — strictly no longer. The swelling of the organic residue is done after 120 to 240 seconds. Don't agitate with brushes or pads during the dwell — that spreads the alkaline solution onto so-far untreated paint and can cause streaking. Once the gel shows clear dissolving spots (visible liquefying of the bug carcasses), the reaction is done.
Then rinse it off cleanly with a sharp pressure-washer jet. Start top to bottom at the grille (it pulls the upper grime down towards the bumper), then go over everything from all sides with clean water. On really stubborn areas (baked-on bug proteins after days without cleaning), a second pass after the pressure rinse makes more sense than an extended first dwell.
In a professional detailing workflow the Insekten-Teufel is often used as a standalone prep step before the main wash — before the snow foam and before the main shampoo. That way the bug load gets handled separately from the standard dirt, which makes both steps more efficient.

The Insekten-Teufel is cleared for painted body panels (all common 2K clear coats), glass (windscreen, mirror glass, rear window), chrome trim, plastic bumpers and unpainted grille slats in aluminium or steel. The mildly alkaline formula (pH 9-9.5) is far gentler on materials than strongly alkaline all-purpose cleaners like the Teufels-Reiniger or Koch-Chemie Mzr.
One important limit applies to carnauba-waxed cars: the alkaline surfactants attack the organic wax layer harder than pH-neutral shampoos — with weekly bug treatment the wax seal degrades visibly faster on the front areas. The detailing move: after every bug treatment, re-seal the treated areas with a quick detailer or spray wax to keep the hydrophobic behaviour.
On ceramic-coated cars (SiO₂ coatings like Q²M, Cquartz, GTechniq) the Insekten-Teufel is compatible — the inorganic coating structure is far more resistant to alkaline cleaners than organic wax. Even so: don't repurpose it for the standard wash, use it only for bug load.
Strictly mind the limit on fresh paint (smart repair, respray within the last 6 weeks). During the curing phase the polymer network isn't fully cross-linked yet — alkaline surfactants can get into the microstructure and cause discolouration. Wait at least 6 weeks after any paintwork.
Touchscreen displays in modern cockpits, genuine-leather steering wheels or Alcantara interior surfaces are off limits — the Insekten-Teufel is explicitly an exterior front-end product, not made for the interior.

Demand for bug remover in the DACH market shows a clear seasonal double peak. The first is in spring between March and May — pollen glue from flowering trees (especially birch pollen in April), spring insects and the first pollen fall on freshly waxed summer cars. The second peak is in high summer (June to August) — bug swarms after rainy days, mosquitoes in the south of Germany, mayflies along rivers, holiday trips with long motorway legs.
If you drive 200 to 500 kilometres a week in summer, you've got a visible bug layer on the front bumper after every trip. Wait longer than three days and the bug proteins bake into the clear coat under UV and heat — then the Insekten-Teufel alone won't cut it anymore and you're into polishing correction.
The 1 litre spray bottle at around 13 EUR lasts about 12 to 15 applications with weekly front cleaning in peak season — a full summer for one car. The 5 litre canister at around 36 EUR saves about 45 percent per litre and is the right call for touring drivers, mobile detailers and vehicle fleets — around 7 EUR per litre, which is clearly the better economics at pro volumes.
Off-label, the Insekten-Teufel has found strong uptake in the motorhome community. Caravan fronts have an especially large bug strike area thanks to the tall build and the vertical front — a 7 metre motorhome front collects 30 to 50 times as many bugs after a day trip as a car. The gel grip on vertical GRP fronts and acrylic-glass pop-top roofs is the deciding advantage here.
Safety note: the product falls under GHS07 with the hazard statement H319 (causes serious eye irritation). Use calls for safety goggles with frequent use, and nitrile gloves are recommended for sensitive skin. The low VOC content under 3 percent makes the product user- and environment-friendly — use is unproblematic even in residential areas and on pitches. Proper disposal goes via the AVV waste code for alkaline aqueous solutions.

For carnauba wax sealants, expect accelerated protective layer degradation — re-seal with a quick detailer or spray wax after each insect treatment to maintain hydrophobicity.
After 4 minutes, the water content evaporates, alkaline surfactant residues crystallize on the paint surface and can cause etching — visible as dull or whitish spots, irreversible without machine paint correction. On a 50-60 degree warm black bumper, the time window shrinks to 60 seconds. Never in the sun, never longer than 4 min.
In a 1-liter container, 50-80 ml per front is sufficient for about 12-15 applications — a complete touring season for one vehicle. In a 5-liter canister, the price per liter drops to ~7 EUR (-45%).
