Streak-free glass cleaner with lotus effect for car and household

Tugalin is TUGA Chemie's iconic blue glass cleaner, based on alcohol surfactants with silica nanoparticles, that dissolves insect proteins and nicotine film in 3 to 5 seconds of dwell time. The pH value of 9 is alkaline enough for organic acids, but gentle enough for tinted and film-coated windows. Built-in lotus effect due to SiO₂ nanoparticles — water droplets roll off. For real glass, mirrors and film-coated windows; not for TFT and LCD screens.

Spray sparingly from a distance of 20 cm — 2 to 3 sprays per half windshield are sufficient; consumption is 2 to 5 ml per square meter of glass surface. Wipe in circular motions with a softener-free microfiber cloth, let air dry for 3 to 5 seconds, then gently absorb residual moisture with a second dry cloth. Never wipe dry, never use in direct sunlight. Store in a cool, dry place; shelf life 24 months after opening.

Car glass cleaner: Tugalin "Glas-Teufel", the streak-free DACH benchmark

What is Tugalin? A ready-to-use glass cleaner from TUGA Chemie in Osnabrück, built on an alcohol-surfactant matrix of isopropanol, alkoxypropanol and silica nanoparticles. The pH sits at 9 to 9.5 — alkaline enough to lift insect proteins and nicotine film, but gentle enough for tinted and filmed glass. The silica content leaves a temporary lotus effect that makes water bead off. Not approved for TFT or LCD screens — the alkaline surfactants attack anti-reflective coatings.

Tugalin "Glas-Teufel" is a blue, ready-to-use glass cleaner from TUGA Chemie GmbH and one of the best-known products in German detailing. For us at Detailing1 it has been the yardstick we measure every other glass cleaner against for years. According to the ingredient declaration the formula contains isopropanol (CAS 67-63-0), alkoxypropanol as an ether-alcohol co-solvent, sodium laureth sulfate as an anionic surfactant, plus silicon dioxide nanoparticles and a blue CI Direct Blue dye for visual control.

The mildly alkaline pH between 9.0 and 9.5 is the key: it neutralises organic acids in insect residue and tree sap without going after film adhesive or anti-fog coatings on modern windscreens. During the wiping stroke the silica nanoparticles fill microscopic roughness in the amorphous glass surface and lower the surface energy — the result is a temporary hydrophobic film that makes raindrops bead off, with no separate sealant applied.

This lotus effect lasts in the maintenance range. On side windows, the rear screen and inside the cabin the hydrophobic layer typically holds two to four weeks; on the windscreen the wiper friction breaks the film down a lot faster. If you want a genuine multi-month sealant, you're better off with fluoropolymer-based specialists like Soft99 Glaco — Tugalin gives you the cleaner plus a mini-sealant in one step, not the sealant as the main job.

  • Streak-free in 3 to 5 seconds of dwell time. The alcohol/ether-alcohol blend flashes off slow enough that the microfibre doesn't run dry, but fast enough that no smears dry on. The established industry standard for usage is 2 to 5 ml per square metre of glass — spray on more and you saturate the cloth and smear the loosened micelles across the screen.
  • Built-in lotus effect from SiO₂ nanoparticles. Unlike pure alcohol-surfactant glass cleaners (Koch-Chemie Glas Star, Sonax ScheibenKlar), Tugalin leaves a measurable hydrophobic film that makes rain bead off. In the DACH market there's a whole group of buyers searching specifically for a "window cleaner with lotus effect" — Tugalin delivers exactly that, without the separate sealing step. No substitute for a real glass sealant, but a clear step up from straight cleaners — especially on side and rear glass.
  • EUR 5.20 per litre in the 5 L canister. In bulk, Tugalin is the value winner of the DACH detailing market. SONAX ScheibenKlar in the 500 ml retail bottle runs about EUR 19.98 per litre, Meguiars Perfect Clarity sits at 28 to 31 EUR per litre, GYEON Q²M Glass around 39 EUR. The concentrate rival Koch-Chemie Glas Star is marginally cheaper at EUR 5.14/L in the 10 L canister, but it forces distilled water and a dilution workflow on you.

Tugalin Glas-Teufel hero shot

Detailing1's tip from the shop: Day-to-day, three out of five customers who come to us with hazy windscreens have the same problem — they've washed their microfibres with regular detergent plus fabric softener. Softener leaves cationic surfactants in the fibres, and on the first wipe they transfer onto the glass and lay down a smear film that not even the best glass cleaner concentrate can shift. Glass cloths get washed separately with no softener — ideally with a dedicated microfibre detergent at 60 degrees. The second classic is wiping dry under pressure: the moment the cloth stops on the glass, it drags microscopic fibres onto the surface and leaves streaks you only see against the light. Let the residual moisture flash off on its own — then the second, dry cloth gently lifts the last drops without any rubbing. We call it the two-cloth system; here at our Nordhorn showroom (Bosinks Kamp 8) it's been the only route to truly streak-free vision for years.

Spray on, wipe in passes, let it flash off — don't rub it dry afterwards.

The standard workflow starts with picking the right cloth. A softener-free waffle or carbon-fibre cloth (something like Microfiber Madness Vitria or comparable detailing cloths) is the gold standard, because the open fibre structure soaks up the excess moisture without smearing it around.

Spray Tugalin on very sparingly: two or three pulls per half a windscreen is plenty. In strong wind or inside the cabin, spray the cleaner straight into the cloth, not onto the glass — otherwise the spray mist drifts onto sensitive trim or display surfaces.

Work the wetted cloth in a flat cross-hatch pattern: horizontal across the whole screen first, then vertical. The ideal pressure is minimal — the cloth should glide, not rub. Dwell time is only three to five seconds, after which the residual moisture flashes off on its own, streak-free.

As soon as the glass looks dry, the second, completely dry and soft microfibre comes in — gently and with no pressure it picks up the last bit of moisture. Never rub on already-dry glass.

This workflow doesn't work on a windscreen baked in the sun. The solvent evaporates in a split second and the surfactants dry on as white streaks before the cloth even touches the surface. In direct sun, move the car into the shade or do the interior early in the morning.

Applying Tugalin Glas-Teufel

Real glass, films and mirrors yes. TFT and LCD screens no.

Tugalin is approved for real glass (inside and out), vehicle windows, mirrors, tiles, ceramic and chromed fittings. Filmed windows with sun-protection or anti-shatter film are explicitly compatible — the formula contains no aggressive ammonia compounds that could break down the film adhesive. That's an important difference from a lot of household glass cleaners off the drugstore shelf.

Strictly off-limits, though, are screens based on TFT (thin-film transistor) and LCD (liquid crystal display) technology. The alcohols in Tugalin — isopropanol and alkoxypropanol — penetrate the amorphous polymer structure of polycarbonate display covers and can trigger stress-crack corrosion (crazing). The result is a milky, irreversible clouding of the display. On top of that, the mildly alkaline pH attacks the factory anti-reflective and oleophobic coatings that repel fingerprints.

If you accidentally get overspray on a sat-nav, a digital dash or piano-lacquer trim, never rub the spot dry. The emergency fix is to dab it off straight away with a short-pile, soft microfibre soaked generously in distilled water — dab, don't wipe. That picks up and dilutes the alkaline surfactants and solvent before they work into the polymer structure.

Inside the car, Tugalin suits the inner windscreen, side windows, rear screen, wing-mirror glass, the interior mirror, chromed door handles and glazed headlight clear-coat covers made of glass. On polycarbonate headlights (common on models from 2015 on) the TFT logic applies: better to reach for a pH-neutral all-purpose cleaner.

Tugalin Glas-Teufel result

Spring detailing, winter sun and the 5-litre math.

Demand for high-performance glass cleaners in the DACH market follows two clear seasonal peaks. Five years of Google Trends data for "Glasreiniger" show a clear rising-wave signal peaking in March — the current 8-week average sits about 12 points above the 12-month mean. The first peak is spring detailing between March and May, when pollen, insects and the winter fogging film inside the cabin all need dealing with at once. That interior fogging builds over the winter months from off-gassing dashboard plastics, paired with heater air and condensation — a greasy film that cuts visibility hard when the winter sun sits low.

The second peak lands in late autumn and early winter, when the low sun mercilessly exposes streaks and smears on the inside of the windscreen. Anyone who never had a problem with their inner glass in summer suddenly sees every wipe mark in November. In both phases it's worth grabbing the 5-litre canister: with weekly use over the critical three months, the cost per job drops to a few cents, and the carry-over for next season stays put.

The 1-litre spray bottle at around 11 euros is the easy way in for one or two cars in a private household. At a realistic usage of 2 to 5 ml per square metre, one litre covers about 200 to 400 square metres of glass — roughly 30 to 60 full cleans of a mid-size car. On a weekly rhythm that's a six-month supply.

The 5-litre canister at around 26 euros saves about half per litre and is the right size for detailers, smaller valeters and households with three or more cars. The pump head from the 1-litre bottle unscrews and goes onto a separate empty 1-litre cylinder bottle, which you then top up from the canister — the established fix, because the original 5 L canister isn't suited to spraying from itself.

In a household setting Tugalin works just as well as an all-round glass cleaner — mirrors, windows, glass tables, oven doors. If you want to dilute the product, DACH detailing forums have settled on dilution ratios of 1:5, 1:10 or 1:20 with distilled water, depending on how dirty things are. The official safety data sheet doesn't expressly recommend this off-label dilution, but it's worked reliably in practice for decades. For pro valeters and commercial use in Switzerland the note stands: the isopropanol it contains is in principle subject to the federal VOC incentive tax of around 3.00 CHF per kilogram of pure VOC content — a factor large valeters with high annual usage build into their costing.

Frequently Asked Questions about Tugalin Glass-Teufel

What is Tugalin and what is it used for?

Tugalin "Glas-Teufel" is a ready-to-use glass cleaner from TUGA Chemie based on isopropanol, alkoxypropanol, sodium laureth sulfate, and silica nanoparticles. Its pH value of 9 dissolves insect proteins and nicotine film, while the SiO₂ components leave a temporary lotus effect for water runoff on the pane.

How do I use Tugalin Glas-Teufel correctly?

Spray 2 to 3 times per half pane from a distance of 20 centimeters — never directly in blazing sun. Wipe with a microfiber cloth in cross-stitch motions, allow to air dry for 3 to 5 seconds, then gently absorb residual moisture with a second dry cloth. Never rub on a dry pane.

What is the difference between Tugalin and Koch-Chemie Glas Star?

Tugalin is ready-to-use with a built-in SiO₂ lotus effect — cleaner plus mini-sealant in one step. Koch-Chemie Glas Star is a 1:3 concentrate with no sealant component, but it's more economical in a 10-L container (€5.14/L vs. €5.20/L for Tugalin in 5L) — but with a dilution workflow.

Can Tugalin be used on tinted windows?

Yes, explicitly approved for sun protection and shatter protection films. Unlike many drugstore glass cleaners, Tugalin does not contain aggressive ammonia compounds that decompose film adhesives. The pH value of 9 is alkaline enough for insect proteins, but gentle enough for film polymers.

What happens if Tugalin gets on a TFT display?

Strictly excluded — the alcohols (isopropanol, alkoxypropanol) irreversibly dissolve anti-reflective coatings and can cause stress corrosion cracking (crazing) in polycarbonate display covers. In case of accidental overspray, immediately dab with distilled water on a soft microfiber cloth — never rub dry.

How economical is Tugalin and how long does it last?

1 liter is sufficient for approximately 30 to 60 complete cleanings of a mid-range vehicle, at 2 to 5 ml per square meter — meaning about two to three years for a car with weekly care. In a 5-liter canister, the price per liter drops to approximately €5.20. Store frost-free between 5 and 30 degrees for 24 months after opening.

How to use Tugalin Glass Devil

Two-cloth system for streak-free visibility

Before use, park the car in the shade – in direct sunlight, the solvent evaporates in seconds and the surfactants dry as streaks before the cloth even touches the surface. At outside temperatures above 25 degrees or on windshields immediately after driving, allow at least 30 minutes for cooling.

Spray Tugalin sparingly from a distance of 20 to 30 centimeters – two to three sprays per half windshield are sufficient. In strong winds or indoors, spray directly onto the first microfiber cloth, not onto the glass. The industry standard consumption is 2 to 5 milliliters per square meter of glass surface – applying more saturates the cloth and smears the dissolved micelles.

Work with the moistened cloth in a cross-stitch pattern: first horizontally across the pane, then vertically. The pressure is minimal; the cloth should glide, not rub. Allow to air dry for three to five seconds, then gently wipe the second, completely dry microfiber cloth over the pane to absorb any remaining moisture – never rub on already dry glass.

For the inside of the windshield (often affected by winter fogging), also ensure that the microfiber cloths have been washed without fabric softener. Fabric softener leaves cationic surfactants in the fibers, which are transferred to the pane during wiping and create a milky film.

Notes: Tugalin is approved for real glass, films, and mirrors – TFT and LCD screens in the cockpit are strictly excluded because the alcohols attack anti-reflective coatings. In case of accidental overspray on a display, never rub dry – immediately dab with distilled water on a soft cloth. Store frost-free between 5 and 30 degrees Celsius; lasts 24 months after opening. For the 5-liter canister format, a separate spray bottle for refilling is recommended – the canister itself is not suitable for spraying.
