Universal Dilution with Tugalan Concentrate from TUGA Chemie

Tugalan is the alkaline universal cleaner concentrate from TUGA Chemie and is one of the inconspicuous workhorses in German detailing operations. For us at Detailing1, it's the product that sits on the workshop shelf when a single specialized cleaner is no longer enough. One bottle, one concentrate, a dozen applications. From a heavily soiled hood to an oily workshop floor, from the exterior of a motorhome to a greasy vehicle bay. The basic formula is the same; only the mixing ratio changes. This is why the product has been used for decades in fleets, independent workshops, and cleaning companies. It doesn't replace every specialized cleaner, but it covers 70 percent of all everyday tasks with a single container.

A good concentrate is not a panacea, but an honest basic cleaner. The difference to a ready-to-use product is not in its effectiveness, but in storage space and cost per liter of final solution.

• Variable dilution from 1:5 to 1:50. For heavy soiling in the engine bay, you use a strong dosage; for final plastic care, a weak one. One canister thus covers the entire range of common cleaning tasks.
• Alkaline against oil, grease, and insects. The surfactant-supported, mildly alkaline basic formula reliably dissolves organic contaminants — from insect residues on the front end to dried silicone oil in the wheel arch.
• Industry standard from Lower Saxony. Tugalan has been produced by TUGA Chemie in Goslar since the 1970s and is a quiet reference for economical basic cleaners in everyday workshop use.

Its effectiveness is based on a combination of anionic and non-ionic surfactants, alkaline builders, and solubilizers. The pH value of the undiluted concentrate is approximately 12 to 13; in working dilution, depending on the dosage, it ranges between 9 and 11. This weak to moderately strong alkalinity is sufficient to saponify fatty acid compounds and dissolve organic dirt without attacking paint or anodized surfaces. The high active ingredient content is why one liter of concentrate yields between 10 and 50 liters of working solution, depending on the dilution. The cost per square meter of cleaned surface is thus significantly lower than any ready-to-use universal cleaner from a hardware store. In fleet operations, this is the decisive cost factor.

Practical tip from Detailing1: Use a two-bucket system when cleaning larger surfaces. One bucket with the working solution, one bucket with clear water for wringing out the sponge. This prevents you from reapplying dissolved dirt to the freshly cleaned surface. For dosage, a marked 5-liter watering can or a mixing cup with a scale is useful. Freehand dosing by eye almost always leads to excessively high concentrations, which leaves streaks and a sticky surfactant film. Our rule of thumb: first test the weakest sensible dilution, then increase if necessary. For most vehicle exterior cleanings, 1:20 is perfectly sufficient; for engine bays and heavily soiled wheel arches, it goes to 1:10; for interior plastic cleaning, 1:40 or weaker is enough.

Dilute. Dose. Apply. Rinse.

The application is simple, the order remains crucial. First, roughly pre-clean the surface to be cleaned or pre-wet it with a high-pressure cleaner so that loose particles are already rinsed off. Stir the concentrate into lukewarm water depending on the degree of soiling. Never work on hot surfaces, as the alkaline solution will otherwise dry within seconds and leave marks. Apply with a spray bottle from workshop supplies or a large sponge, let it soak for one to three minutes, wipe off with a microfiber cloth or rinse with clear water. The foam is deliberately controlled so that the product adheres to vertical surfaces such as hoods and door edges for a few seconds without immediately running off. For interior cleaning with low dilution (1:40 or weaker), a damp cloth is sufficient for wiping, no rinsing is necessary. For exterior applications and on horizontal workshop surfaces, always rinse with clear water to prevent surfactant residues from drying on.

A point that sooner or later becomes apparent in every workshop: Tugalan deliberately foams little. At first glance, this may seem like a disadvantage, but in practice, it is intentional. Strong foam psychologically conveys cleaning power, but it only means there is a lot of air in the solution. The actual work is done by the surfactants in their dissolved state, not in a foam bed. When using Tugalan for the first time and seeing the thin, almost foam-free working film, one might briefly think the product is too weakly dosed. A look at the dissolved grease on the cloth proves the opposite. This is precisely why Tugalan is not a typical foam party for the car wash, but a workshop cleaner for targeted applications on the vehicle and at the workplace. The low foam formation also has the practical side effect that you need to rinse less, which saves noticeable time when cleaning multiple vehicles per day in fleet operations.

Not on hot. Not on bare aluminum. Not neat.

Tugalan is a basic cleaner, not a multi-talent for all surfaces. It has no place on uncoated aluminum, polished chrome parts, and open-pored leather surfaces, as the alkalinity can promote corrosion or leaching of the fat liquor. On hot surfaces in the summer sun, the solution dries in seconds and leaves dull spots that can only be removed mechanically. Application neat, i.e., undiluted, is also not intended. The concentrate is designed to be brought to working concentration with water. Applying the concentrate directly to the surface will result in excessively high alkalinity and surfactant residues, which will later appear as a sticky film. Always test first in an inconspicuous area, especially on painted surfaces, plastic trim strips, and textiles. Particular caution is advised with tinted films, vinyl decals, and matte painted body parts, as the mildly alkaline solution can attack the coating in the long term if used too frequently or too concentrated. Gloves are mandatory, safety glasses are recommended, and in case of skin contact, rinse with plenty of water.

Another point many users underestimate is the shelf life of the working solution. The diluted working solution cannot be stored indefinitely and loses its effectiveness after a few days because the surfactants slowly hydrolyze and the alkaline builders are neutralized by atmospheric carbon dioxide. We therefore recommend always preparing the working solution fresh and not saving the rest at the end of the workday. The concentrate itself, however, is stable in storage and, when stored sealed and upright, will easily last two to three years. The temperature should be between five and thirty degrees; frost should be avoided. The typical amber coloration of the concentrate comes from the dissolved surfactants and is not an indication of contamination or aging. Some batches are slightly lighter, others darker; the effectiveness remains identical.

The Concentrate for Workshops and Fleet Operations

For occasional home use, a concentrate is the wrong choice; a ready-to-use all-purpose cleaner is better for everyday use there. For workshops, fleet operators, car dealerships, cleaning companies, motorhome rental companies, and anyone who details multiple vehicles per week, Tugalan is the mathematically most economical option. From a 5-liter canister, with an average 1:20 dilution, about 100 liters of working solution are produced; at 1:40, even 200 liters. With proper use and a sealed container, the canister is stable for at least 24 months. This makes Tugalan a workshop product with a clear statement: unspectacular in appearance, reliable in effect, honest in consumption ratio. A classic for everyone who doesn't need ten special bottles on the shelf, but a basic cleaner they can rely on.
