  • Washing your car in three stages, with no scratches in the paint

How do you wash a car properly? In three stages: a pre-cleaner pulls the heavy dirt off without touching the paint, snow foam soaks the rest and rinses it away, and only then does the wash mitt with shampoo come out. Every step you skip turns into grit under the mitt. At Detailing1 you find the right product for each of the three stages.

Car washing isn’t a single job, it’s a sequence that lifts the dirt off in stages. The reason is pure physics: grains of sand and brake dust are harder than clear coat. Drag them across the panel with a wash mitt and you create exactly the fine scratches you later see as swirls in the sunlight. That’s why the pre-cleaner and the foam have one job: get as much dirt off as possible before anything touches the paint.

    • Three stages, three sub-categories. The workflow runs through pre-cleaners for the touch-free first stage, foam & snow foam for the soak, and car shampoo for the hand wash.
    • Concentrates set the category. The Koch-Chemie Green Star „Gs" Universalreiniger tops our sales list and gets diluted anywhere from 1:10 to 1:20 depending on the job — one product for the pre-wash, wheels, interior and engine bay.
    • The pre-wash saves more than it costs. Take the heavy dirt off first and you need far less pressure with the mitt later. That pressure is exactly what makes polishing necessary down the line.

Day-to-day from Detailing1: We often see cars getting washed in full sun, just because the weather happens to be nice. On hot paint, shampoo and water dry faster than you can rinse, and they leave behind limescale spots that only an acidic cleaner will take back off. Wash in the shade or early in the morning, and always finish one panel before you move to the next. If the surface starts to dry before you’ve rinsed, reach for the hose in between — better one rinse too many than picking off water spots afterwards.

Sand is harder than clear coat, and that decides everything

The whole structure of a car wash follows one single fact of physics: the particles on the paint are harder than the paint itself. Quartz sand from road dust sits at around 7 on the Mohs scale, clear coat well below that. Every grain dragged across the panel under pressure leaves a mark.

On their own these marks are invisible, but they add up. What shows up after two years as a circular pattern in the sunlight is tens of thousands of fine scratches scattering the light instead of reflecting it. In the scene they’re called swirls, and they come almost entirely from washing and drying — not from the environment.

That’s where the running order comes from. Every step before the wash mitt is there to cut down the amount of particles. A pre-cleaner chemically breaks up the greasy film of dirt, the pressure jet rinses it off, and the foam soaks the rest and carries it downward as it runs off. What that means for you: by the time the mitt touches the panel, there’s already far less left that can scratch.

The second lever is contact pressure. A wash mitt with a deep pile pulls particles down into it and keeps them off the paint surface. A sponge with a flat face just pushes them along ahead of it. That’s exactly why the classic yellow petrol-station sponge is the one tool that plays no part in detailing anymore.

The third lever is the water itself. Hard tap water leaves limescale as it dries, and that scale bakes into the paint structure when the sun hits it. In areas with hard water it pays to give a final rinse with soft or demineralised water — it saves you the limescale remover later, and the polishing to get baked-in spots back out.

The pre-cleaner works before anything touches the paint

The pre-wash is the step most people skip, and the one with the biggest effect on the state of the paint.

An alkaline pre-cleaner chemically breaks down the film of road grime, oil and insect residue. Alkalis saponify fats, so they turn them water-soluble — what was stuck on before now runs off with the water. The Koch-Chemie Vorreiniger B „Vb" Vorreiniger is our best-seller at this stage.

For insects and organic residue a dedicated product pays off. Bug splatter is protein-based and literally bakes into the clear coat in the sun. The Koch-Chemie Pre-Foam efficient „Pfe" Vorreiniger & Insektenlöser covers both in one step.

Dwell time is the deciding factor and it gets underestimated all the time. Three to five minutes on a damp — not dry — surface: that’s when the real work happens. Whatever gets broken down in this phase doesn’t have to be rubbed off mechanically later.

The key is not to let the pre-cleaner dry on. On a sun-warmed surface that can happen faster than the intended dwell time, and dried-on alkalis leave edges behind. When in doubt, work in smaller sections and mist them again in between.

For heavily soiled cars after winter there are acidic pre-cleaners that also dissolve limescale and inorganic deposits. They don’t belong on polished wheels and they don’t belong in your routine — used spot-on they’re the right tool, used constantly they wear on seals and bare metal parts.

Snow foam soaks, and it isn’t shampoo

Foam is often taken for a wash detergent you just don’t spread by hand. In reality it has a different job.

Snow foam is built for cling time, not for slickness. The foam is meant to stick to the vertical panel as long as possible, so the surfactants have time to work, and to carry the loosened dirt down with it as it slowly runs off. The Koch-Chemie Gentle Snow Foam „Gsf" Reinigungsschaum is the sales leader in this group.

A car shampoo, on the other hand, is optimised for slickness. It’s meant to form a film between the wash mitt and the paint that the mitt glides over instead of rubbing. That takes different surfactants and usually additives that lower the surface tension.

So the two product types can’t sensibly be swapped. Shampoo in a foam lance makes a foam that collapses in seconds and soaks nothing. Snow foam in the wash bucket gives you little glide film and so more friction under the mitt.

For heavily soiled cars there are intensive foams with a higher active content, such as the Koch-Chemie Active Foam „Af" Intensivschaum. They work more aggressively and so aren’t meant for the weekly routine on a sealed car.

There are two ways to make foam, with different results. A foam lance on a pressure washer mixes in air under pressure and delivers the dense, long-standing foam you know from videos. A pump foam sprayer works without a pressure washer, makes a slightly looser foam and is plenty for most cars. The right kit sits under spray bottles & pressure pump sprayers.

The real practical benefit of foam, by the way, is less about cleaning power and more about time. While the foam does its thing, you can knock out the wheels and door shuts — it doesn’t make the job longer, just more efficient.

Two buckets and a mitt with a deep pile

The hand wash itself comes at the end and it’s the step with the highest scratch risk. Two techniques bring it right down.

The two-bucket method keeps wash water and rinse water apart. One bucket holds the shampoo solution, the other clean water. After each panel you rinse the mitt in the clean bucket before it goes back into the solution. That way the dirt you’ve picked up stays in the rinse bucket instead of ending up back on the paint on the next pass.

A grit guard at the bottom of the bucket boosts the effect. The rinsed-out sand sinks below it and doesn’t get stirred back up when you dip in. It’s a detail that sounds like overkill and shows up in the result over the years.

The order on the car follows the dirt: roof first, then the glass, then the upper side sections, and the sills and rear bumper last. The lower area carries the most road grime, and what ends up in the mitt down there shouldn’t make it back onto the roof.

Drying is just as much about technique. A drying towel is laid flat and drawn off, not rubbed. Rub, and in this phase you put back the scratches you avoided during the wash. The right cloths are under cloths.

A second mitt for the lower sections is the simplest upgrade there is in this category. Sills, rear bumper and the area behind the wheels carry the coarsest dirt, and what the mitt picks up down there is the last thing you want on the bonnet. Two mitts cost little and save you the polishing that’s otherwise due after two years. The right models are under wash mitts.

And if the water beads off in droplets after the wash instead of sheeting off flat, your sealant still has life left. If it sheets off flat, it’s gone — and then it’s time for an appointment under sealant & polishing.

The range for pre-wash, foam and hand wash

Our car-wash range spreads across the three stages, with Koch-Chemie and SONAX as the two strongest names.

The all-purpose concentrates lead on revenue and cover more than just the wash. The Green Star „Gs" and the Mehrzweckreiniger „Mzr" work as a pre-cleaner, wheel cleaner or interior cleaner depending on the dilution. For beginners it’s the most economical way into the range.

With the shampoos the choice runs from the classic Koch-Chemie Autoshampoo „As" Auto-Shampoo to care shampoos with a sealant component like the Ceramic Effect Shampoo „Ces", which lays down a thin layer of protection with every wash.

For ceramic-coated cars the Reactivation Shampoo „Rs" is a product that reactivates the existing coating instead of stripping it — the sensible choice when you want to keep a ceramic coating alive.

If you’re working without a water hookup, the Rapid Rinseless Wash „Rrw" Waschen ohne Abspülen is the answer for lightly soiled cars in a flat complex or over winter, when there’s no tap to hand.

SONAX makes up the second big group and mostly covers the ready-to-use products where no mixing is needed. GYEON, Meguiar’s, CarPro and INNOVACAR add a handful of articles each, mostly in the shampoo segment. The TUGA Chemie Teufels-Reiniger® Universalreiniger is the alternative in the concentrate space for anyone who doesn’t want to start out with Koch-Chemie.

With the foams Koch-Chemie dominates, from the mild version for the routine to the intensive foam for the deep clean after winter.

City car, high-mileage driver and sealed car

How much effort makes sense depends on how dirty the car is and the state of the paint — not on the calendar.

For a city car with moderate dirt a two-stage routine is enough: foam on, soak, rinse, then a hand wash with shampoo. A separate pre-wash with a pre-cleaner only pays off here after the car’s sat for a while or in winter.

For the high-mileage driver with motorway miles the pre-wash is a must. Bug residue on the front end and mirrors is protein-based and, after two days in the sun, won’t come off without soaking. Here a dedicated bug remover in the first stage pays for itself right away.

On a sealed or ceramic-coated car the product choice changes. Strongly alkaline pre-cleaners eat into the coating, and an aggressive shampoo shortens its life by months. Here pH-neutral shampoos and mild foams belong in the routine, and the strong products only come out once a year.

On a car coming out of winter, you run the full routine once, including an acidic pre-cleaner against salt residue and a follow-up check for fallout rust. Anything that turns up there leads on to paint prep. The spring session is the more important of the two anyway, because road salt keeps working in seams and wheel arches longer than any summer dirt.

And if there are still spot contaminants left after the wash — tar, tree sap, glue residue — those are cases for cleaners with the right specialist products, not for more pressure with the wash mitt. Dissolved spot by spot they cost you two minutes; worked at mechanically they cost you clear coat.
