Spray Sealants: Wax, Polymer, or SiO2 — The Category Guide

Spray Sealant: A Layer That Does More Than Just Shine

You're standing next to your car after washing it, the water has dried, the paint looks good. And then it rains two days later — and everything is sticky again. Limescale, pollen, dust. As if you never washed it.

A spray sealant changes exactly that. In just a few minutes, it applies a hydrophobic layer to the paint, which repels water, reduces dirt adhesion, and extends the shine. No magic, no coating appointment, no curing time. But: not every spray sealant works the same. SiO2, polymer, wax — the differences are real and determine whether the product works for your daily life or fails after the first rain shower.

Spray sealant means: protection in under 10 minutes

A spray sealant is a liquid sealant product that is sprayed onto the still slightly damp or dry paint after washing and then spread with a microfiber cloth. In less than ten minutes, a transparent sacrificial layer is created over the entire vehicle.

Unlike a classic ceramic coating — which chemically bonds to the clear coat and takes hours to cure — spray sealants work physically. They apply a thin protective layer to the surface that keeps UV radiation, acid rain, and bird droppings away from the actual clear coat. However, they last for a shorter period: weeks to a few months instead of years.

This is a deliberate strategy, not a disadvantage. Those who wash every two to four weeks simply reapply the sealant — and thus have the opportunity to regularly check the condition of the paint. Swirls, scratches, and contaminations are noticed before they become permanent.

The term spray sealant is a general term. It includes wax-based, polymer-based, and SiO2-based products — each with its own character, strengths, and weaknesses. What they have in common: spray bottle, microfiber cloth, done. What distinguishes them: durability, water repellency, chemical resistance, and the character of the shine. Exactly these differences determine which product suits your workflow.

SiO2, Polymer, Wax — three worlds, one goal

Behind every spray sealant is a technology that determines how the product protects, what the shine looks like, and how long the effect lasts. The three main categories differ fundamentally.

Wax-based spray sealants work with synthetic or natural wax — often carnauba in combination with polymer carriers. The shine is warm and deep, and the water behavior is more "sheeting": the water flows off as a continuous film, rather than beading in individual drops. Durability: 3 to 6 weeks. The advantage lies in the optical result — no other sealant type creates so much color depth on dark paints. Black, dark blue, dark green — wax makes the color glow.

The disadvantage: wax is sensitive to alkalis. A strong alkaline snow foam or a high-pH shampoo will remove the layer in a single wash. Those who use wax must wash pH-neutral — consistently, every time.

Polymer sealants use synthetic polymer chains that form a uniform film on the paint. The result is a cool, glassy shine with good beading — the classic round water droplets that sit on the paint. Durability: 4 to 12 weeks, depending on the formulation and washing frequency. Polymers are more car wash resistant than wax and tolerate higher-pH cleaners significantly better.

For drivers who wash regularly and still want solid basic protection, polymer is the pragmatic choice. No product type is used more frequently in everyday life by professionals, because processing speed and error tolerance are important in daily work.

SiO2-based spray sealants — often marketed as "ceramic spray" or "quartz spray" — contain silicon dioxide in various concentrations. SiO2 forms a glass-like layer that is harder and more chemically resistant than wax or polymer. Durability: 4 to 16 weeks. The beading is particularly pronounced — high, round drops that roll off the paint even with a slight incline.

Important: An SiO2 spray sealant is not a ceramic coating. The SiO2 content is typically between 2 and 10 percent, while a true coating is between 50 and 80 percent and cures chemically. Those who believe they can achieve the results of a 300-euro coating with a 15-euro spray bottle will be disappointed. But those looking for a robust, everyday sealant — SiO2 is the right choice.

Durability alone doesn't tell you if a product is any good

Most comparison tests reduce spray sealants to one number: durability in weeks. That's like judging tires only by mileage — and ignoring how they brake in wet conditions.

Three criteria are at least as important. First: water behavior. Sheeting — the continuous film of water runoff — keeps the paint cleaner than beading, because no water remains that would leave limescale when drying. For vehicles that are parked outdoors and regularly exposed to rain, sheeting is often the more practical choice. Beading looks more spectacular, generates better videos on social media, and is the more popular effect on garage vehicles — because the problem of limescale spots does not exist there.

Second: chemical resistance. Anyone who uses snow foam as a pre-wash — and everyone who wants to avoid swirls should — needs a sealant that can withstand the pH value. Wax-based products measurably falter here. SiO2 sealants generally tolerate pH 2 to pH 12 without significantly losing their protective effect. For vehicles that are exposed to road salt in winter and need aggressive decontamination in spring, this is not a luxury, but a basic requirement.

Third: application tolerance. Some spray sealants forgive mistakes — too much applied, left on too long, applied in direct sunlight. Others immediately show streaks, stains, or high spots. For beginners, an error-tolerant product is significantly more important than maximum durability. Koch-Chemie deliberately formulates the Spray Sealant S0.02 so that it flashes off immediately when distributed — you wipe it on, it evaporates behind the cloth, done. No dwell time, no buffing, no time pressure. This makes it the most honest introduction to the world of spray sealants.

Wash, dry, spray — the three-step process

Applying a spray sealant is uncomplicated, but three points determine the result. Mistakes in preparation cost more protective effect than choosing the wrong product.

Step 1: Clean surface. The sealant only adheres to clean paint — truly clean paint. This means: a thorough hand wash with pH-neutral shampoo, ideally with pre-wash using snow foam. Those who seal directly after the spring wash have the best basis of the entire year.

Stubborn contaminations — rust film, tar spots, baked-on insect residues, industrial dust — must be removed beforehand with a detailing clay bar or chemical decontaminant. A sealant on dirt is wasted product: the sacrificial layer covers the contamination instead of the clear coat, adheres less well, and comes off faster.

Step 2: Drying or wet application. Some spray sealants are applied to dry paint — the classic spray-and-wipe method. Others are designed for wet application directly after washing: spray on, spread with a drying towel and dry at the same time.

The GYEON Q²M Cure can be applied in both ways — an advantage if you want to adapt your workflow depending on the weather and time budget. Wet application saves a step, dry application gives more control. When in doubt: follow the manufacturer's technical data sheet.

Step 3: Panel by panel. Never spray the entire car at once. Spray the hood, spread it, wipe off. Then the fender. Then the door. Two to three sprays per panel are sufficient — more is not more protection, but more streaks and product waste. Turn or change the cloth after each panel, so you work with a clean side.

A clean, soft microfiber cloth with at least 300 gsm is a must — no dish towel, no chamois, no old t-shirt. The cloth is the second most important factor after the product itself.

Four spray sealants, four philosophies

In the Detailing1 range, there are over a dozen spray sealants from various manufacturers. Four of them show how differently brands interpret the topic — and for which type of driver they are intended.

The Koch-Chemie Spray Sealant S0.02 is the workhorse for professionals and beginners alike. Polymer-based, flashes off immediately, silky surface with visible color deepening. No SiO2, no ceramic promises — but a formulation that has been working in professional detailing everyday life for years.

500ml are enough for about 8 to 10 complete vehicles. Those who value speed and error tolerance and have no problem reapplying the sealant every three weeks should choose this one. The price-performance ratio is hard to beat in the polymer segment.

The SONAX XTREME Ceramic Spray Sealant introduces SiO2 — as a so-called hybrid ceramic formulation. The beading effect is significantly stronger than with pure polymer products, and the durability is 6 to 12 weeks depending on use. SONAX has optimized the product for end users: intuitive application, good processing tolerance, even usable in direct sunlight. Awarded as the price-performance winner in the AUTO BILD comparison test — solid everywhere, reliable in everyday life.

The GYEON Q²M Cure REDEFINED considers spray sealant as part of a system. SiO2-based, designed as a maintenance product for vehicles that already have a ceramic coating. It reactivates and extends the hydrophobic properties of an existing Q² Coating — but also works on uncoated paint as a standalone sealant.

GYEON users know the system: coating for long-term protection, Cure for regular refreshing. Wet and dry application possible. This is not a marketing idea, but a workflow that works in practice.

The Soft99 Rain Drop Bazooka comes from Japan and approaches spray sealant completely differently: as an aerosol can instead of a pump sprayer. The polymer base creates aggressive beading — water drops stand high and round on the paint like marbles. The application is unusual: spray onto wet paint, rinse with water, dry. No cloth needed — the water distributes the product.

Ideal for owners who want to keep the ritual of hand drying pragmatic and still seek a spectacular water-repellent effect. A product you have to try once to understand.

Your paint, your problem — the right sealant

There isn't one best spray sealant. There's the right one for your situation, your driving profile, and your care routine.

Your car is parked outside, you wash every two weeks: You need chemical resistance and good self-cleaning between washes. SiO2-based like the GYEON Q²M Cure or the SONAX XTREME Ceramic. The SiO2 content ensures that rain carries away everyday dirt instead of sticking it to the paint. Sheeting behavior is more important here than spectacular beading — because standing water plus sun equals limescale spots.

You polish regularly and want maximum color depth: Wax-based sealants create the warmest, deepest shine — especially on dark colors. The effect is visible, not a marketing fiction. But expect to reapply the sealant every three to four weeks, and consistently wash pH-neutral. For show car care, garage vehicles, and vehicles rarely exposed to rain: the right choice for the right scenario.

Your car already has a ceramic coating: The GYEON Q²M Cure is built exactly for this. It refreshes the hydrophobic properties of the coating and noticeably extends its durability. Not a foreign product on the coating — but a system that works together. In our paint sealant range, you'll find coatings and maintenance products as coordinated workflows.

You are a beginner and want it simple: The Koch-Chemie S0.02 is the most forgiving. No dwell time, no time window, no streaks with too much product. Plus a clean microfiber cloth and five minutes of time — and your paint is protected.

If you're just starting with sealing after the winter break, this is the most honest introduction to a topic that sounds more complicated than it is.

What all spray sealants have in common: they don't replace washing or coating. They complement both — as a protective layer between washes, as maintenance for existing sealants, as quick insurance for everyday life. A clean base, regular application, the right product for your own workflow — that's all it takes. The paint will thank you with shine, strong beading, and significantly less effort during the next wash.
