You place them against the tyre before you start, and they guide the water hose, pressure washer hose or cable past the wheel on a roller system instead of letting the line get trapped under the tyre. They don't replace a hose reel or a ceiling boom, and they aren't meant for winches.

Hose guide rollers for car care are guide rollers you wedge under the tyres before washing, polishing or vacuuming. When the hose swings round the corner of the wheel as you walk round the car, it rolls along them instead of slipping into the gap between tread and ground. They only share the principle with the pulleys on a winch, block and tackle or belt drive: a line gets turned around a fixed point.

One move for hose and cable. Koch-Chemie explicitly names both types of line for its rollers: hoses and cables during cleaning and detailing. The same 2 rollers sit under the pressure washer hose when you wash and under the machine's cable when you polish.

Two rollers for the hose side. The hose doesn't have to get past all 4 wheels, just the corners it bends round as you walk the car. Usually that's the two wheels on the side it comes from – and there are exactly 2 cable guides in the set.

Set once, for the whole job. According to the manufacturer, the rollers go under the tyres before you start. The wheel corners are sorted once at the beginning, instead of dragging you back to the wheel again and again in the middle of the wash.

Detailing1's tip from the shop: If you're polishing or vacuuming with an extension lead, don't put the coupling near the wheel – keep it a bit before or after. Plug and coupling are the thickest points of the line and catch on the roller when you keep pulling. If the connection sits on a straight run, only smooth cable goes through the roller, and the machine stays powered even when you walk round the corner of the wheel.

A roller at the tyre guides a line, not a rope under load

A guide roller at the tyre is a roller body that sits against the wheel before you start and guides the hose or cable past the contact patch instead of letting it get trapped. Search for the term and you quickly end up with winches and pulley blocks. Same principle, different tool: there, a pulley turns a rope under load; here, it turns a line around a stationary wheel.

In English-language accessory shops the part is called a hose guide. Koch-Chemie calls them cable guides and describes the purpose plainly: the roller system stops hoses and cables from getting trapped under the tyre and keeps the line moving. The manufacturer promises no more than that, and the roller doesn't need to do any more either.

Why does the hose get trapped in the first place? In front of and behind the spot where the tyre stands on the ground, a shallow wedge forms between rubber and surface. If you pull the hose at an angle round the wheel, it slips right into that wedge. There, the car's weight pins it down, and every further pull traps it deeper instead of freeing it.

The roller works ahead of that wedge. It sits against the tyre so the line runs along it before it reaches the gap. An edge the hose snags on becomes a curve it runs through without resistance. That's the whole principle, and it's exactly why it works with a thin cable just as well as with a water hose.

Hose reel, ceiling boom and roller solve different bottlenecks

Hose reel, wall bracket, ceiling boom and roller at the tyre keep the hose in order at different points: the reel handles its length, the boom its route from above, the roller only the corner at the wheel. Keep them apart, and you won't buy one expecting it to do the other's job too.

The hose reel makes sure no more hose lies on the ground than necessary, and that it's wound up neatly after the wash. On the page for pressure washers, it rightly appears as an accessory worth planning in. But it doesn't decide which route the unrolled hose takes around the car. It still ends up at the wheel as soon as you walk round the corner.

Wall brackets and ceiling booms bring the hose to the car from above, as in self-service wash bays with a ceiling boom. There's hardly any hose on the ground there, and the roller at the tyre becomes largely unnecessary. It doesn't work without paying attention, though: according to forum reports, even a ceiling boom can knock against the car if it's moved the wrong way. Holders for bottles, brushes and machines at the wash bay are under wash bay equipment. The roller adds to that order on the ground; it doesn't replace it.

Two mix-ups on top of that. The garden hose guide with a ground spike steers the garden hose past flower beds – a different design for a different place. And while the word “Schlauchabroller” (hose unroller) is in the title of the Koch-Chemie product, in the trade it usually means a reel. What's meant here are only rollers that sit against the tyre.

Check the fit with your own hose, not the data sheet

For the rollers at the tyre, the manufacturer gives neither material nor maximum hose diameter, tyre width or suitable surface, so you check the fit yourself the first time you use them. That's not a formality: there's no number you could read beforehand to tell whether your hose fits.

In accessory shops, comparable hose guides come with claims like fits any tyre size or protects the hose for good. For the Koch-Chemie rollers there's no evidence of that, and we don't carry such claims over. What is documented: roller system, use under the tyre, hoses and cables, two in the set.

What to look out for: the hose has to fit in the roller and mustn't jump over the edge when you pull it along. The roller has to stay against the tyre when there's tension on the line. And it shouldn't slide away on your floor, whether that's paving, concrete or tiles. A thick pressure washer hose makes different demands than a polisher's cable.

With a cable, the question is simpler. It's thinner and lighter than any water hose and sits rather loosely in the roller. The only critical points there are the connections on an extension lead – more on that in the tip above.

On numbers: two rollers cover the corners the hose runs round on one side of the car. If you're working with a line on both sides at once, say hose on the left and cable on the right, you need a guide on both sides. Accessory shops also sell hose guides in sets of four. For the usual hand wash with one hose, two will do.

The rollers are on the wheels before the first jet of water

The rollers are placed right when they're sitting at the wheels the hose bends round as you walk the car, before the first jet of water, with the line already laid in. If you only fetch them once the hose is stuck, you've already had the jolt. The routine is short, and that's why it's easy to skip.

First, work out where the hose comes from: tap, pressure washer, reel. Then walk through the route you take round the car when washing, once in your head. The rollers go on the two wheels where the hose changes direction. According to the manufacturer, they're wedged under the tyres; then you lay the hose or cable in.

While you work, feed the hose along instead of yanking it over from the opposite side. One free hand on the hose is enough. Nilfisk gives the same advice in its tips on pressure-washing a car: guide the hose by hand so it doesn't scrape along the car. If the line ends up outside the roller, put it back before you pull on.

The same move applies when polishing. A corded machine from our polishers hangs on its cable, and when you move from the bonnet to the side panel, that cable goes round the wheel corner just like a hose. Doing the interior with a vacuum cleaner, it's the power cord. Koch-Chemie explicitly names cables, so the rollers just stay put after the wash.

After the job, collect the rollers again. On the ground they're trip hazards, and before the car is moved they have no business at the tyre. Hose and cable never get driven over. If you store the two rollers where the hose hangs, you won't forget them next time.

The Koch-Chemie Hose & Cable Guard guides hoses and cables alike

The Koch-Chemie Hose & Cable Guard 2 Stück is a set of two cable guides that get wedged under the tyres before you start and guide hoses and cables past the wheel. That's all the product information says, and that's exactly how we rate the rollers: as a simple tool for one single, clearly defined job.

In our shop, the rollers sit in the Koch-Chemie range with the wash bay equipment. That fits a manufacturer whose range is geared towards professional detailers. The few enquiries we've had about the rollers came from detailing businesses, including a mobile detailer. If you walk round other people's cars every day, you notice every snag at the wheel all the more.

The product information says nothing about material and dimensions; how to check the fit yourself is covered further up. With hose guide rollers, the decision lies less with the roller anyway than one step earlier: whether you work at your own wash spot with the hose on the ground, or in a bay where the hose comes from above. The other helpers for keeping things tidy while you work are under accessories.

Hose scratches happen when you pull the hose along, not when you wash

Hose guide rollers pay off wherever the hose runs round the car on the ground – at your own wash spot and in mobile detailing – and you can do without them where it comes from above. That distinction matters more than any product feature.

If you wash in front of the house with a pressure washer and the hose on the ground, the rollers take the stop at the wheel off your hands. If you work mobile and stand on a different surface every day, they're one more small bit of routine. If, on the other hand, you wash in a self-service bay with a ceiling boom, there's hardly any hose at the wheel and you can skip the rollers.

For the occasional wash with a garden hose, paying attention is often enough: lay the hose round the wheel in a wide arc before you walk round, instead of pulling it tight along the tyre. That works as long as you remember. The roller turns remembering into one move at the start – and that's its real value when your concentration drops after an hour at the car.

There are three things hose guide rollers can't do. They don't stop a hose you lay over the bonnet or wing from brushing the paint there. They don't change the lance distance or the pressure – everything you need on that is under pressure washers. And they don't protect against kinks along the rest of the hose length; that's the reel's job.

We don't have any reviews for the Koch-Chemie rollers yet, and we don't carry over opinions on other products. So the assessment sticks to the mechanism. And that's clear-cut: a hose stuck at the tyre gets pulled free with force, and that's the moment it drags over the wheel arch, side panel or bumper.

That's exactly the point that's easy to miss. When you think about scratch protection, you think of the wash mitt, towels and the two-bucket car wash, and overlook the line that's lying next to the paint the whole time. The roller at the tyre doesn't make the hose any softer; it just takes away its reason to snag – and with it, the reason to be yanked free.

Thanks to its roller system, the Hose & Cable Guard keeps hoses and cables from getting pinched under the tyre.
